Barbells For Boobs

The deadlift isn't the most complicated movement in the world.  The bar is on the ground, and you have to pick it up.  Tight stomach, back straight, bar close, pick it up.  One place it can be a bit harder to grasp though is the position you are in right when you lift the bar off the ground, the initiation of the lift.  You sometimes see the hips fly up first causing the chest to dip forward, leveling out the back almost into a leaned forward position.  This happens because the lifter extends their knees faster than they raise their chest off the ground.  It can happen the other way too, instead of extending the knees the lifter opens the hips.  This is usually noticeable by seeing the bar travel around the knees, can you picture it?
You want to establish your back angle in the set up, squeezing (or bracing into the bar) the bar to create a system of tension between you and the bar.  Then with that tightly engaged (not comfortable) position, you simply press the ground with your feet while you raise your chest up.  If you extend your knees and raise your chest at the same time, your back angle will not change off the ground.  This allows for a more efficient bar path, enabling you to lift more weight in a healthier position.
Karen was keeping a great position off the ground today at West Marine.
