Crossfit vs. The Crossfit Games

   If you haven't yet noticed, the 2018 Reebok Crossfit Games have started this morning! Individual athletes have raced on road bikes, teams have performed synchronized muscle ups and deadlifts, Annie has been reppin' Central T-shirts on CBS, and the day ended with a marathon row for the individuals! That's 42,195 meters and a 4 HOUR time cap!

   Whether you do Crossfit or not, this 5-day event is very interesting and exciting to watch; however, I think it's a good time to talk about the difference between what they do out in Madison and what we do here in our gym.

   Crossfit is constantly varied functional movements executed at a high intensity to improve our work capacity across broad time and modal domains (it makes you fitter)! Games athletes show us what elite fitness is. The highest levels of intensity and work capacity are put on display in spectacular fashion, and these athletes somehow seem to improve every year. But this type of training is unsustainable.

   Our goal at Central is for you to be fitter, not just tomorrow, but 10 or 20 years from now. We are in this for the long haul. Moving safely comes first. Moving consistently comes second. And only then do we ask for intensity, which is all relative anyways. It is fun to throw around heavy weights and fall on the floor in a puddle of sweat, but it is also fun to play with friends, pick up our kids, and live independent lives when we're old, and to just feel good!

   Enjoy watching the Games, they will be playing on the TV at the gym or on the CBS Sports app on you phones. And enjoy your own fitness journey!
